3 things my Grandad taught me

Hey Guys!

This in many ways is a very personal post, my Grandad passed away a few years ago now and although I didn't see him as often as I would have liked to due to him living in Devon, I still considered myself to be very close to him and he taught me some very important things.

1) She who worries most, worries before it is necessary
I've always been a worrier and anyone that's close to me will know that I remember telling my grandad one time that I was worried about my upcoming GCSE exams, that was the quote he said to me. Unfortunately he didn't see the results of those exams but I do know that if he had, he would of been proud of me for doing well in them.

2) Be true to yourself
Throughout his life I can say that my grandad remained true to himself. If he didn't like someone, chances were they knew about it. I admired him for that, he never pretended to be anyone that he wasn't and he never tried to please anyone else.

3) Get some fun out of every day
I admit, as my grandad aged and became weaker this did get more difficult . However he always made an effort to leave the house as he seemed to always be happier when he saw me smiling, whether that was a trip to the local newsagents or a day trip to the beach, he was always there for me and always made a real effort to make me happy.

A few days in Ingoldmells/Skegness

Hey Guys!

So I recently had a few days away to end the summer holidays with my boyfriend and one of my best friends. I always enjoy getting away and the beach is one of my favourite places to go, although I also enjoy adventure and always being on the go, I hate sitting still!

This was my first break away just with friends and I had a lovely time, we hired a lovely caravan near fantasy island which was very reasonably priced at £100, I would definitely go again!

On our first night we decided to eat at a place called the beachcomber which was recommended to us, we didn't realise it was a 3 mile walk away until it was too late!

We discovered a play park in skegness on the second day which nobody seemed to be using, although I've been to Skeg a few times I never knew this was there! We enjoyed the rides and being by the beach and generally having a very busy day

On our last day we decided to go to the beach which was good to have a bit of a rest as we were all quite tired by this point (and feeling slightly ill) the waves were massive but absolutely freezing

Thank you so much to Hannah for taking all of these photos (I think the others were a little camera shy)

Lincolnshire Garden Show

Hey Guys!

So I've always tried to get out and about as much as I can, my mum is really into her gardening so recently we went to a garden show at the Lincolnshire Showground,

Admiringly, this wouldn't usually be my sort of thing although it happened to be linked with a dog show which was also taking place which was interesting to watch and kept me occupied whilst mum was looking around for plants.

There was lots of activities going on throughout the day and lots of different stalls to nose around!

Despite not being a big fan of plants and gardens myself, the variety that was at the show meant there was something for everyone and it would be something I would attend again.

After we left we went to a local cafe called The Tea Cosy which is a lovely village cafe serving a range of hot food and snack and has a lovely community atmosphere.

I have been here many times with family and friends and the staff make the effort to get to know you which adds to the community feel.

It is also decorated with vintage ornaments which adds a shabby chic look to this cosy cafe.

New Years Resolutions

Hey Guys!

So as 2014 is nearly at an end I think now would be a good time to share some of the things I hope to achieve in 2015.

1. Be Healthier - This includes exercising and eating healthier, particularly more food and veg. I'll also be starting a new series on my blog called 'Fitness Friday' in order to help with this in the New Year.

2. Worry Less - this might be a tricky one as I do worry about every tiny thing, a lot of which I'm not able to control anyway. Next Year I'd like to be able to stress less and just relax more.

3. Blog More - I wasn't exactly brilliant at Blogmas with all the preparations for Christmas but next year I would like to get more involved on the blog, document more of my lifestyle, more fashion and beauty posts and definitely some more reviews too. There may even be the odd competition too as a thank you to all you lovely readers so look out for that!

4. Travel More - I love travelling, whether that be in the UK or abroad. I love experiencing new places and trying new things as I think it helps you to get the most out of life. Although it can be costly I'd love to be able to travel a bit more in 2015.

So they are my resolutions, have you made any yourself? Let me know in the comments what you're looking forward to or hoping to achieve in 2015.

#BigBlogmasProject A Christmas DIY

Hey Guys!

So I realise that I've been lacking with then Blogmas project recently, one of the reasons for this is at school has been really busy and I've not been feeling to great. I will try and get back into it as much as possible though!

Today I wanted to share with you one of the things I've been getting involved with in school. I recently joined a Young Enterprise group where you have to make and sell a product to try and make as much profit as possible, I really liked the idea of this as I am doing business at A-Level.

The product that we came up with was scented candles. With it being close to Christmas we decided to do Christmas scents of Christmas Pine and Frankincense and Myrh. In the New Year we will be looking into other scents!

We make the product in our school laboratory and sell them to friends and family as well as at trade fairs. We're currently selling the smaller candles pictured above for £3 and lager ones for £4. You can find out more information on our Young Enterprise company on the Essence Made Facebook page!

Let me know what scents you would like to see Essence Made produce

#BigBlogmasProject 3 books I want to read!

Hey Guys!

So I'm sorry that yesterday's post didn't go up, it was due for a variety of reasons, I didn't feel it was good enough, I wasn't happy with it and I also had a lot of other stuff going on which I personally saw as more important. I am however back today with a little post with 3 books I want to read!

This is a book that I have seen around a lot and also heard a lot about, I've never read a book by Karen Joy Fowler so it may be going on my Christmas list!

The next book is one I saw in WH Smiths and had a little brief read of the first couple pages. It was very mysterious and appealed to me a lot as it is the sort of book I would usually read.

This book is one that appears interesting simply by the title. I love books with a curious and interesting title and it really made me want to read more about it, they don't give too much away with this one though!

Have you read any of these books? What books do you want to read?

#BigBlogmasProject2014 Looking like Christmas

Hey Guys!

So this post is just a general Christmassy post. I've started to get really excited about Christmas this week. People are playing Christmas songs at school that everyone sings along to, shops are playing Christmas music, some staff are dressed up in Christmas outfits/jumpers and there's lots and lots of decorations popping up all around.

I wasn't able to go to the Christmas light switch on in my town but I have been to have a look at them now and it really puts you in a good mood. Everyone generally seems so much happier at Christmas and it's a really festive and happy time.

This photo isn't great as it was taken on my phone in the car but you get the general idea, I love the city at this time of year and tomorrow is the start of our Christmas Market which I am really looking forward too!

Let me know what you love most about this time of year in the comments!

Lifestyle: Birthday Meal!

I am very thankful to have such a lovely and supportive group of friends. They have helped me through so much and I honestly don't know where I'd be without them.

It's my birthday on Monday so I decided to get the gang together do a bit of shopping and then go for a meal at The Harvester.

I had such a great time and I honestly don't remember the last time I have laughed so much, it was definitely what I needed and made my birthday even more special.

Now it's getting colder I was also able to wear this snug little jumper that I got a while back from Zara, it's so comfy!

My Scoliosis Story

Hey Guys!

So today I thought I'd do a slightly different post on something that I haven't talked about on my blog before, it might not be to everyone's taste and I appreciate that but if it raises a tiny bit more awareness of Scoliosis then that can never be a bad thing.

When I was 12 I was diagnosed with a condition called Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine.
In my case I suffered a lot of pain and was awake most nights screaming in pain sometimes to the point where I'd have to go to hospital, I'd try to carry on as normally as possible by going to school and meeting up with friends but I became so drained with the codeine and diazepam I was taking for the pain it was clear that something had to be done.

At first I tried a back brace which although it wouldn't reduce the curve it would hopefully hold it in place, unfortunately, it didn't work, it made the pain worse and left red marks all over my back, I didn't find it beneficial and ended up quickly throwing it away.

After my parents looked on the internet we found that Sheffield Children's Hospital did a brace known as the Spinecor brace. This was a more modern version of the Boston Brace and we decided to go to Sheffield to see if it could help.

At Sheffield we found out that it was too late for the brace to be effective, I had an aggressive curve and although they could monitor it I would need surgery one day.

I had the surgery on August 4th 2010. In the build up to the surgery I didn't tell anyone how nervous I really was, I saw it as something I just had to get on and deal with. I wish now that I had talked more as it would have probably helped take some of the anxiety away.
The day after the surgery I suffered very rare complications which were described as one in a million. My lung collapsed, my blood pressure dropped, I caught Pneumonia and lost all movement and feeling in my arms and legs. My parents were told that if I survived I would never walk again.

It was a slow process but eventually I went on to make an almost full recovery, I learnt to walk again and I got my feeling back, I still have weak lungs and I have accepted that I always will but this is only a small consequence compared to what could have been.

Scoliosis can also make you very self conscious, it can cause your hips and shoulders to be uneven and your shoulder blade to stick out.
I personally missed a lot of school in year 8 due to my operation and have always struggled to fit back in to routine. I'm in Year 12 now and even now I suffer with anxiety, however, I don't think this is entirely due to my scoliosis.

I wanted to help other children going through a similar experience which is when I set up Scolio. Scolio sends gifts and grants wishes to children in the UK with serious conditions and illnesses, more information on this can be found at my Facebook page Help Jess help others or by adding Scolio Fundraise on Facebook.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I hope that you now knkw a little bit more about Scoliosis. I'm sorry that this post is quite different to what I'd usually talk about but it is something that has hugely affected my life and shaped me as a person.

Sick Day Essentials

Hey Guys!

So one thing I've noticed recently is that I'm really busy and seem to have been posting less. I've just started sixth form and had a lot going on with that and I've also been poorly.

I'm feeling slightly better today so I thought it would be a good time to do a little blog post on sick day essentials!

1. A cosy jumper

This is probably one of the most comfy jumpers that I have, I bought it a while ago from Primark and love to wear it when I'm not feeling great and just spending the day at home.

2. Throaties/Soothers

With feeling sick I've also had a saw throat and have found these to be really helpful, I'm sure anything similar would also help too but definitely something I'd pick up again.

3. Some magazines

Now my mum kindly picked these up for me as I didn't want to do school work because I didn't think I'd be able to do it very well. I do think everyone needs a couple good magazines or a good film when they're sick.

4. Comfort food!

These are a particular favourite of mine. I haven't really felt like eating anything these past few days so any food is good food at the moment. I haven't been eating particularly healthy but when you're not feeling like eating it's best to eat what you can, when you can.

Sorry for not posting so much recently, I love blogging and really want to keep it up so am trying to figure out some kind of routine!
